This week we're welcoming Cennydd Bowles to FFConf in our "Meet the Speakers" who will be giving a talk titled: "Revenants".

He'll be asking: What values and visions do we see in today's web? How can we fight for alternatives?

In the interview, we asked: Twenty years in tech, then a shift to researching what technology should do. What prompted the shift? And is there anything you miss from tech?

Partly age: I think many people working in tech need a different plan for the second half of their career. But also I came to the realisation that while I still love technology, the industry turns my stomach.

There are still people fighting the good fight, but I wasn't prepared to be on anyone's team any more, to wear the branded gear at the cost of my own moral silence. And the anti-intellectualism of maker culture had made me feel mentally blunt.

I do miss the money, though.

As Remy ages along with the web industry, he was definitely nodding along reading this!

Don't just take our word for how awesome FFConf is, here are some attendee thoughts from previous years:

Every time I've been to FFConf I've left with my faith fully restored in humanity and the web development community, and itching to try out new things. It's always an inspiring event in my calendar!

Handcrafted, intimate, and full of thoughtful people.

I don't often recommend conferences, and I'm not one for networking, but I get so much out of FFConf that I tell every engineer I meet "if you go to one conference this year, go to FFConf I tell every junior engineer at work to go along, and every one of them comments on how much they loved it.

Really great conference - I love how there is a mix of different types of talks. However, the best thing of all is just seeing fellow front end folks in general and feeling that collective positive buzz.

It’s a wonderful conference with a clear emphasis on community, diversity and inclusivity. The result is an eclectic line up and an array of talks that validate, inspire and energise. If you’ve never been, I can’t recommend it enough.

• Declan Chidlow wrote a lovely post on CSS relics - a fun look back over time at some of the weird and wonderful (CSS based) features. A personal favourite of Remy's was the HTML Components (the .htc files).
• Pod Save the UK ran an excellent interview with Cory Doctorow (45m) on AI, its "threats" and the hyperbole surrounding the industry. An excellent watch and highly recommend it.
• While smartphones give us the web, they are also doing a lot of damage and there's renewed energy to ban phones from schools - there's some excellent information and resources at smartphonefreechildhood.org.
