Green web, the AI bank run and blowing s*it up

Latest Event News

This week we're welcoming Hidde de Vries to FFConf in our "Meet the Speakers" who will be giving a talk titled: "The future of the web is green".

In his talk, he'll look at best practices from the W3C's new Web Sustainability Guidelines and beyond, focusing on lessons you can apply today.

In the interview, we asked: What's the most common thing teams could do better when they try to measure their site's footprint?

Most teams start with proxy signals for progress, like page weight and Lighthouse scores. Those are easy to measure, and they are great to get started, but don't tell the whole story. Ideally, they would be to focus on the whole system, and include the product's full lifecycle and everything that affects it.

Read Hidde's full interview and meet him and all our speakers on 13th November.

From Our Archive

Our friend Marc Thiele (who runs the fabulous Beyond Tellerand) shares some wise words about the importance of events like FFConf but also our friends at WDC, State of the Browser and Viewport Conference. (Remy will be at all of these).

Get your tickets early โ€“ organisers need to plan and work with the incoming money

Check their sponsorship prospectus โ€“ often times sponsorship starts at a lower cost than you think and even the smallest packages help big times

Tell other people about it โ€“ there is no big marketing budget, so you, spreading the word, means the world

(Emphasis ours).

Just in the last year, Middlesborough Front End, All Day Hey in Leeds and Front Conference in Zurich have all closed their doors. So keep supporting these types of events and help us all by spreading the word.

Community News

It's been hard to not read a story about how Big Tech are calling for governments to rein them in, either because they're worried about an impending imagined apocalypse or because their software has gone "rogue" (there's no such thing as rogue AI).

Still, this is an excellent video (well worth the time) on the AI companies, regulation and money: ๐Ÿ“บ The AI Bank Run Has Started.

On the side of a better web, ๐Ÿงต this thread on Bluesky from Rick Viscomi on "Modern Web Guidance" is a useful reminder of where we can improve. It comes with an LLM skill, but the list alone is valuable too.

Finally, a bit of fun respite from all the doom, this toy will let you destroy the web - so go ahead and ๐Ÿงจ blow up this year's event site ๐Ÿ˜‚
